Hannes Köcher


lives and works in Vienna/Austria and in Esch sur Alzette/Luxembourg.
He is a media artist, programmer and painter, deeply rooted in a past of electroacoustic composition.
He develops interactive installations for exhibitions and museums, builds performance automatons and creates paintings in cooperation with his robots.

After a long engagement with computer graphics, the desire for materialization arose, followed by the development of the first drawing robot in 2012 – a polar graph – that brings these graphics onto paper and canvas. The drawings and paintings are mostly based on physical simulations of threads that are exposed to complex force fields in virtual worlds.

His musical activities have mainly evolved around his alter ego hons, under the name of which he has published three albums and performed at numerous occasions.

As a media-artist, he exhibited in the Vienna Museum, in the Sehsaal Vienna, in the Schallform Gallery Vienna and others. Group exhibitions and performances at WUK and Tanzquartier Wien, in the Presidential Gallery Hofburg Vienna, at the FutureLab Conference and at the Reflektor Vienna.

Throughout the last twenty years he has contributed music, sound design, visuals and software to numerous projects, performances and artistic co-operations, including 
Anschwellen Abschwellen for Volkmar Klien, Ars Electronica Linz, 
Höhenrausch Linz, SoundArt – Installation für alien productions, OK Offenes Kulturhaus,
Tondenkmäler der Tiefbaukunst in Österreich (Volkmar Klien, Stift Melk). 
Welcome Home (Music for the feature film by Andreas Gruber, wega film wien).

In 2009 he attended a TURBO residency at ImpulsTanz Festival Wien.

For the Vienna based architecture firm COOP Himmelb(l)au he worked on beyond the blue at the Museum of  Applied Arts in Vienna, braincloud revisited at Biennale of Architecture in Venice and Future Revisited at the ICC in Tokyo.

He is the Co-founder of the company “Köcher & Grill OEG”, designing software for realtime media applications and computer arts until 2006.Since 2007 he is a senior project partner with cat-x exhibitions.
Having studied composition and computer music (electroacoustic, electronic and experimental music) at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, he started his career in the arts‘ world as a production assistant, unit manager and assistant director for various TV and feature films.
